Polish Long Stem Beauties No, I am not speaking of flowers. I attended the Miss Polonia Beauty Contest recently. I have been to number of these affairs and always had picked one of the lovely women as my favorite. I felt odd this time because I had not centered on any girl. It occurred to me they were all great looking. Long legged – and what legs, even the shortest looked tall and shapely. But it is never just that we avid beauty contest goers appreciate, it is their lively, healthy and smart personalities, which pervades the colorful atmosphere. Their presence alone creates an aura of visual splendor and their brainpower, accented by a great sense of humor, provides the entertainment – and feeling of awe. Awe is a pretty good expression. Starting with the mistress of ceremony Ms. Marta Michel, another tall, graceful beauty who might have easily stolen the whole show except for the overall competition she faced, was cool and natural. Charming is the word. Marek Dzida, owner of Hellada Gallery in Long Beach, is also the producer of this unique contest. He hosted the event in tandem with Ms. Michel and had the sense to give her the floor. She was the first Miss Polonia 2000. These fine looking women don’t change much. The third runner up to Long Beach’s Miss Universe contest in the late fifties, Alicja Bobrowska, now a talented artist, was one of the presenters of the crown. There is definitely something about Polish women. Call it an earthiness if you will, they exude health. The two winners – the contest includes two titles – Miss Queen of Polonia, Isabelle Durian and Miss Polonia California, Ewelina Pulawska, had to be difficult choices for the judges and audience, since theirs votes vere counted along. Liking trying to extract two perfect flowers from a dozen. Well, fourteen actually. That’s how many contestants there were. In addition to the above winners the others were: Katarzyna Kaminska (Second Runner Up, Queen of Polonia), Beata Kordek, Magda Kosik, Magda Krysztopik, Karolina Libuda (Second Runner Up, Miss Polonia California), Agata Nowicka, Iwona Okolotowicz, Elzbieta Olejarczyk, Paulina Osial, Katherine Rich, Monika Szubert and Agnieszka Urbanska. Marek comes up with the most succinct questions for the girls. One of which related to a scene in a well-known Polish movie. A 19th century epic “Pan Tadeusz”, in that particular strip a handsome man enters a house and surprises, of course, a lovely young Zosia clad only in her nightgown. She takes off. The question was, “what would you do”, almost all the contestants answered they’d be more inclined to stick around and see what developed. The new Queen went a bit further and showed the audience how she would have given the intruder a smiling come-hither look. Her answer probably put her over the top. The whole event is entertainment, but organizers, who always pushes the culture of Poland, presented folk dancers “Krakusy” and “Podhale” and singers Basia Jerey and Agata Gajczak, which recorder already 4 cds – http://www.agatamusic.com - as an additional show. Both winners are legible to appear in the Miss Polonia America contest in New York in November. I would think they had a better chance to take the top honors being as how, as one contestant here pointed out, we’re happy to be Californians. Tanned, long legged beauties. What a show it was.
