Polish American Environmental Alliance welcomes the Intentional Olympic Committee's decision (from June 19 '99) not to choose the Polish city of Zakopane* as a host of the Winter Olympic Games in 2006. Those games -if taken place- would destroy the most precious National Park in Poland - Tatra National Park. Its value could be compared to Yellowstone or Yosemite National Parks. Tatra NP is protected by the set of Polish and international law that prohibited events such as Olympic Games. Polish American Environmental Alliance joined many other organizations (including from Poland an U.S.) in effort to save the Tatra National Park from proposal of Winter Olympic Games in its heart. This whole proposal was kept in secret for a while, it also avoided few legal points, brought lies (to keep public eyes away from environmental destruction), linked to harass people that spoke up against the proposal, and wasn't consulted with Academia members or nongovermental scientists. In conclusion, the proposal (submitted by Polish Olympic Committee and got strong support from Government) of the Winter Olympic Games "Zakopane 2006' was an issue not gong follow the democracy rules.

.Polish American Environmental Alliance says thank you to all the organizations and individualists from USA that took part in international campaign to stop the proposal "Zakopane 2006". Our thank you goes as well to numerous Polish groups (including group of most known cultural leaders with nobel Laureate Milosz) strongly fighting the proposal. We thank you everyone else (especially those media that covered or campaign) who did anything to help save the Tatra National Park.

The victory over "Zakopane 2006" came together with celebration of 1st anniversary of Polish American Environmental Alliance. P.A.E.A. worked on a lot of different environmental and human rights issues going on in Poland. P.A.E.A. is also supporting certain campaigns in USA. There is much more work to come. We'll never stop our nonviolent and legal work to protect the Polish environment, and to support some efforts of American (in many cases it means global issues) environmentalists.
